Volunteer Spotlight: Canned Food Drives!

Want to volunteer for AFAC but can’t find opportunities that work with your schedule? Doing a food drive is a great way to get involved on your own time! September is the perfect time to hold a food drive because it is Hunger Action Month. Additionally, summer is always the slowest time of the year for canned food donations, but hunger doesn’t take a summer vacation. At AFAC, we have slowly been using up all our canned food supply over the summer and we are currently VERY low on cans.

If you are interested in holding a food drive here is how to get started: You can register your food drive on AFAC’s website. We have flyers and other resources that you can customize and distribute to neighbors. Then you’ll pick a day to collect the food and deliver it to AFAC. Food drop-off times are Monday-Friday 8:30am-4:30pm and Saturday 8:30am-1pm.

Food donations are tax deductible; donated food is valued at $1.93 per pound. Your food donations will be weighed and you will be asked to fill out a receipt at the time of drop-off. Volunteers can also earn 1 minute of volunteer service for every 1lb of food collected during their food drive. Please let us know if you are counting your food drive toward volunteer service so we can give you credit for your work!
