AFAC holds several fundraisers and food drives every year. We welcome you to participate in upcoming events and learn about opportunities to help AFAC throughout the year!
Events Throughout The Year
You are invited to join AFAC every spring as we Shine a Light on Hunger and honor those in our community – the many individuals, families, corporations, and community partners – who contribute to AFAC’s success. Let us bring elegance and inspiration together as we celebrate over 30 years of fulfilling our mission and feeding our neighbors in need.
Empty Bowls is a luncheon fundraiser for AFAC featuring uniquely designed handmade bowls. The event is held at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church on Super Bowl Sundays. Bowls are created by potters at local ceramics studios and students from local high schools and university art departments. Delicious chowders, soups and bread are made by local restaurants chefs and desserts are baked by our own volunteers. Tickets are sold for this event and guests get to take home a handmade bowl.
With the assistance of Boy Scout Troops and Cub Scout Packs from the Chain Bridge District of the National Capital Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America, our Scouting for Food Drive is AFAC's largest single day food drive. This partnership has collected over 1 million pounds of food since 1995. Each year, Scouting for Food is held on the second Saturday of every November.
AFAC teams up with the National Association of Letter Carriers for a large food drive event called Stamp Out Hunger, which is held on the 2nd Saturday of every May. Residents leave food donations by their mailboxes and postal workers would pick up the food and deliver it to AFAC. On average, around 25,000 pounds of food donations is collected in this one-day event.
Canstruction is an international design competition that invites teams of designers to create structures using canned food, which is then donated to those in need. The AIA Northern Virginia Competition is entering its second decade, donating all the cans to AFAC. Through the competition, the Chapter has become one of AFAC's top donors and was recently recognized as AFAC's 2014 Community Partner of the Year!
