2023 Summer Hunger Challenge
For many families, summer vacation brings the opportunity for more time spent with family and friends enjoying the beautiful summer months. However, for many of the families in need of food assistance from Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC), summer vacation brings uncertainty about how they will feed their children without the safety net of a school breakfast and lunch. With the added obstacles of inflation and food prices continuing to rise, our clients are experiencing what many are calling a “hunger cliff” – they are having to use the money that would have gone to their other necessary purchases to buy food for their children instead.
Not only do the current economic struggles burden our families, but they also impact AFAC’s ability to continue relieving the food budget of every single family that comes to our doors. Inflation increased the wholesale cost of the foods AFAC purchases by 32%, all while we continue to serve an exponentially rising number of more than 3,100 families every week. Without the assistance of federal or state funding, donors like you are crucial for AFAC to continue meeting the increasing demand for our services.
