Help AFAC by picking fresh vegetables and fruits from local farms and orchards. On rainy days, sort vegetables and fruits indoors. Individuals, families and groups of all kinds enjoy participating. Obtaining fresh produce is a great source of good nutrition and ensures that still edible produce is not needlessly discarded.
Typically, gleaning takes place on Saturday mornings starting at 9:00 a.m. and we expect individuals to stay until noon. Gleaning usually starts at the end of June and runs thru the end of October. Much of gleaning is dependent upon crop availability and the weather. If you are part of a group and want to glean on a weekday, those arrangements can be made.
We glean at farms throughout the region. Some are as close as 45 minutes away, but others are a bit further (about an hour and a half). We encourage people to make a day of it by exploring parts of the area that they usually do not get to see. We also encourage carpools to make the drive more fun and to conserve resources.
Individuals can register to glean by completing the Volunteer Profile form. If you are already part of our online volunteer management system, you do not need to register. You will see gleaning opportunities on the online calendar as dates become available.
A group leader can register to glean by completing the group profile form. Indicate in the text field that your group is interested in gleaning, approximate number of people in your group, and a range of dates you are available to glean. Groups need to be fewer than 50 people.
Approximately two days before you are due to glean you will receive a reminder from AFAC with instructions on what to bring and wear and directions to the site. Please note that due to inclement weather or muddy roads, gleaning may be cancelled. Please check your email before you head out.
