I’d like you to meet Kayla. Kayla is vibrant, smart, and adventurous. She likes chasing butterflies, riding her bicycle, and catching lightning bugs at sundown. Her favorite color is pink and her favorite food is cheese pizza. Kayla is one more child spending her long summer days at our Arlington parks, camps, and playgrounds. But Kayla is a little bit different. Kayla isn’t sure exactly when and where her next meal will come from.
According to data collected by the national organization, WhyHunger, only 4 out of every 21 kids access the food they need to keep growing, learning, and playing during the summer. The Geary-O’Hara Family Foundation is working to solve this horrible and hidden problem in Arlington, and I hope you will join us.
For every $1 you donate to this year’s AFAC Summer Hunger Challenge, the Geary-O’Hara Family Foundation will donate $2. You can make your gift online here or mail your donation to AFAC, P.O. Box 6261, Arlington, Virginia, 22206. Be sure to put Summer Hunger Challenge in the memo line, so we know to double your donation!
If this Summer Hunger Challenge is successful, nearly 3,500 children will be fed by AFAC this summer–350 through our summer backpack and snack program, and an additional 3,150 through our weekly family distributions.
I’m hoping you’ll join me in making sure that food insecurity is not holding Kayla back from making the most of her summer and learning all she can in the coming school year.
Please, join the Summer Hunger Challenge and ensure Kayla, and thousands just like her, have the food they need to play hard, grow strong, and be ready to learn this fall.
