National Nutrition Month Celebration
Along with the Virginia Cooperative Extension (VCE), AFAC celebrated National Nutrition Month at the Central Public Library on March 26th. The theme was “Put Your Best Fork Forward,” and the event included an afternoon of nutrition-related games, activities, and presentations for families.
This was the first time the event was held, and a diverse group of around 60 community members participated, including 27 children. A number of families from the AFAC community were in attendance.
Themed activities for kids were related to the MyPlate food groups (fruits, vegetables, protein, dairy and grains). Children received a nutrition “passport” that was stamped at each of the stations; after completing the stations they received a prize. Other activities included planting vegetable seedlings to take home, participating in a carnival wheel nutrition quiz game, decorating chef hats with fruit, and playing a ring toss game related to added sugars.
Ignite-style presentations (5 minutes each) ranged from an “All Hail Kale” cooking demonstration to dealing with picky eaters to ideas for using the parks and bike trails in Arlington to get moving. Representatives from Arlington’s Healthy Community Action Team (HCAT) were also on hand, conducting interviews with parents about children’s health behaviors, with an aim towards helping to form strategic plans that best support the health and wellness of families and communities in Arlington.
The event was a huge success, and we would like to thank everyone involved. To our participants—thank you for attending! And to everyone else—organizers, activity station volunteers, speakers, VCE Master Gardeners and Master Food Volunteers, and set-up/take-down crew–we couldn’t have done it without you. Thank you for helping to make the event a success!
