Geary-O’Hara Family Foundation
Beneath the summer sunshine, Arlington kids spend their days swimming, playing sports, and trying to forget their empty bellies. They’re counting down to the first day of the school year: dreaded by some, but longed-for by too many. The start of the new term means breakfast and lunch at school. For many children, those are the only meals they can count on – meals they miss when school is out. Summer hunger is rampant in Arlington County and I need your help to end it.
I’m Mike Geary, Founder and Trustee of The Geary-O’Hara Family Foundation. You may remember that we supported AFAC’s Summer Hunger Challenge last year and that program was a big success. This year, we’re proud to partner with AFAC once again and plan to do even more.
AFAC is our community’s go-to organization for combating hunger. This year, AFAC is leveraging partnerships with peer organizations, like Phoenix Bikes, Communities in Schools, AHC, Doorways, Bridges to Independence, and APAH, to bring food assistance to children who need it, and delivering it right where they are.
Last year’s Summer Hunger Challenge was a huge success! With your help, last year’s campaign raised more than $115,000.00 to feed Arlington kids in need. This year, the increase in the cost of food, the increase in the number of children we are feeding, and the increase in the need for food assistance is greater. With this year’s greater need, our gifts must be larger too. The Geary-O’Hara Family Foundation is increasing our commitment this year, and I hope you can too.
For every $1 you donate to this campaign, the Geary-O’Hara Family Foundation will donate $2. Please, join this Summer Hunger Challenge and help me feed children right here in Arlington. You can make your gift online here or mail your donation to AFAC, P.O. Box 6261, Arlington, Virginia, 22206. Be sure to put Summer Hunger Challenge in the memo line, so we know to double your donation! Together, we can make sure that all children in our community spend long summer days at play, with full bellies, bright smiles, and are ready to learn this fall.
