Feed Your Neighbors in Need & Lower Your State Tax Liability!

For the fifth year in a row, the Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC) is an approved non-profit organization for the 2019-2020 Virginia Neighborhood Assistance Program (NAP). New credits issued for the fiscal year 2020 (July 2019-June 2020) mean that for a minimum gift of $500, an individual donor may be eligible to receive a 65% tax credit against his or her Virginia state income tax.

Unlike a tax deduction, a tax credit reduces a donor’s tax bill dollar-for-dollar. For example, a $2,000 donation to AFAC using this program would generate $1,300 in tax credits, so the donation would only “cost” the donor $700. When the tax credits are combined with the federal deductions, the donation “cost” lowers even further.

If you have questions about the NAP program, visit the NAP website.

To reserve your tax credits:

1. Contact AFAC's Development Department at (703) 845-8486, or via development@afac.org. Indicate your interest in NAP credits and note the amount of your gift. If AFAC has exhausted our NAP credit allocation, we will put your name on a waitlist as we make a request for additional credits. We issue our NAP credits on a first-come, first-served basis.

2. Complete the form that will be provided to you and send it, along with your gift, to the following address:

Arlington Food Assistance Center
Attn: Annie Graffis
PO Box 6261
Arlington, VA 22206

When we receive your form and your donation, we will contact you to confirm receipt of these documents.

3. AFAC will process your gift and forward all the necessary NAP credit paperwork to the Virginia Department of Social Services. You will receive a receipt for your gift from AFAC. In six-to-eight weeks, you will receive your NAP tax credit certificate directly from the state of Virginia. When you are ready to file your taxes, you will file your credit certificate along with your tax forms.

If you have questions about reserving NAP credits by donating to AFAC, contact the Development Department at (703) 845-8486, or via email at development@afac.org.
